This past thursday (9/10), during the Syracuse-UConn game, the NCAA refs were doing their level best to manage the thursday night game, one of only a handful of games going on. Before the end of the first half, https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25248575-acc-ref-reportedly-quits-over-handling-video-review-syracuses-ot-win-vs-uconn
Apparently the bosses in NY wanted to review calls even though at least one more play had already happened since the call in question. I suspect referees and umpires are happy to be questioned in real time but how do you do undo plays that have happened since then? There was a long time that ensued on the field while this was being worked out which I assume was the referee trying to suggest to the folks in NY exactly how this is supposed to happen going forward. How do you undo statistics, bets on whether that was a handoff or a pass, etc? What a nightmare. Referee Gary Peterson threw in the towel after the game, an acknowledgement that he didnt want to be involved in a lack of timely re-review. This is the downside of having all of this video footage being captured and potentially analyzable in real time.
